Similar to regular gesso, Matisse Black Gesso is a permanent flexible primer for canvas, board or even paper. This intense black ground has an excellent tooth for easy paint manipulation and dries to a completely opaque layer. If working on canvas, it will tighten the canvas, providing a firmer ground to paint on. Due to its characteristically thick texture, it is recommended that Black Gesso be applied with a spatula or blade on raw canvas or linen. If you are using a brush, mix with equal parts water, particularly for the first coats.
